Godfrey Sports is family-run brand, designing and manufacturing performance kit on site in Nottingham in the UK for the past 40 years. We are a brand ran by athletes, from rowers and cyclists, to footballers and cricketers, meaning our team is committed to making every piece of Godfrey kit to the highest quality and built with performance in mind.
Godfrey Sports can pin point it’s launch to 1978, when founder Judith Godfrey began making rowing kit for her brothers Ian and Stuart Wilson after they gained selection to the GB Rowing Team. This year also saw the birth of Tom Godfrey – the current Director of Godfrey Sports.
In the following years, Judith’s rowing kit took off in popularity, being adopted by the powerhouses of 80s British rowing, including Notts County Rowing Association, Oxford and Cambridge Universities, Leander and Thames Club. The big break came in 1988 – when both the GB and England team contracts go to Godfrey Sports. Steve Redgrave and Andy Holmes win gold in the Seoul Olympics, wearing Godfrey kit.
Over time new techniques in kit manufacturing emerged, meaning the brand could now engineer more technical products, and a world of design was also opened up with the introduction of the print technique called sublimation.
Around this time, Godfrey also starts to branch into other sports, and the iconic Godfrey 'G' could now be seen across many sports at high levels, from cycling, to triathlon, to netball, to the England Weightlifting team’s kit at the Commonwealth Games.
2009 saw the retirement of Judith from the brand, leaving son Tom to head the company. New machinery and techniques were introduced – meaning club customisation could now go even further. Club Kit pages were also brought in by Tom, and a first for the brand – and since then Godfrey Sports is proud to have been supplying performance, technical kit for all from beginners up to Olympic level for the past 40 years. Our vision for the future is to continue providing a custom design service for a range of sports, in a short lead time, without sacrificing quality, innovation or the customer service that has been the hallmark of Godfrey Sports for the past 40 years.
